Grasping Spring: Photographing the Wake of Nature

an arrangement of thin trees amongst a grassy clearing

As the harsh grip of winter gradually loosens its hold, a sigh of relief resonates among many of us who dream for the warmth and serenity that Spring promises. The winter weather has been unyielding and unpredictable, leaving us bundled in layers, stuck in the mud, and craving the awakening that comes with the changing seasons. Like many others, I find myself eagerly anticipating the imminent arrival of spring, eager to shed the heavy winter garments and embrace the wake of nature. As the first buds emerge and flowers begin to unfold, the world transforms into a canvas of colours waiting to be captured. In this blog, we will embark on a visual journey through the lens, exploring the delicate beauty of the natural world reviving from its winter slumber.

A few years ago, I purchased a simple looking house plant for my room. After a few months, it slowly started to diminish and shrink. Over the following few years I made multiple attempts to bring the plant back to life, but was unsuccessful.

This year however, 'Flaming Katy' (also known as Florist Kalanchoe) has come into full bloom in mid-January. This has sparked my hope that spring is just around the corner, and gorgeous flowers will be in full bloom before we know it!

I created this ethereal flower composite using a few different images of the Flaming Katy stacked together. I also added a simple bokeh and did some fine tuning to get the colours perfect, as I wanted to really express the fiery orange of the petals.

Like many other outdoor lovers, I am thrilled to welcome the the calmer, much more workable environments that Spring will hopefully bring. I'm looking forward to meeting some great new clients, and catching up with regular ones, whilst outside in the kinder weather with my camera.
